If you need a letter to prove you are entering Hong Kong for DIS2018, please write to chairs@dis2018.org. When requesting a letter, please send the chairs: your full name; (university) affiliation; nationality as in the passport; and the title of your paper/pictorial/workshop/demo/PWiP/DC presentation.

Other types of proof letters. If you need another type of letter from the chairs, for example for travel funds from your university, please write the chairs and tell them: why you need a letter; your full name; (university affiliation; and the title of your presentation (or in the case of workshops, the title of the workshop you are participating. 

Conference hotels

ACM has negotiated conference prices with a few hotels. Hong Kong has a vast selection of hotels from plainly horrible to opulently ritzy (this is not a pun). The conference hotel list is curated: the price range is reasonable, places are safe and good, and they are within a comfortable distance from the conference site. Concerning conference hotels, please note that

• We treat Harbour Plaza Metropolis as our accessibility hotel. We organize shuttle transportation to this hotel if there is enough demand
• Check cutoff dates below carefully! They vary; our apologies. We tried, but we couldn’t make them consistent
• Some hotels gave us a form and ask you to send credit card information. You can always give the hotel a call if your bank tells you not to do this
• All hotels are best accessible from the airport by taxi. The cab will be in 250 HKD range. A slightly cheaper alternative is airport train to Kowloon Station and then a taxi. There is also a free hotel shuttle to larger hotels
• If you have respiratory problems, tell the hotel well in advance you want a non-smoking room from a non-smoking floor

We have given some tips for those who prefer not to stay in conference hotels after the following descriptions of conference hotels.

Harbour Plaza Metropolis

This is a very large hotel a few minutes from the campus. Its rooms are big by Hong Kong standards, and HPM has a good breakfast in British, Continental and Chinese/Asian style. It is good value, it is integreated to a mall for services, and its pool area is enjoyable. Some guests smoke in this hotel despite bans, so when you check in, ask a floor in which smoking is forbidden.

Harbour Plaza Metropolis is our accessibility hotel! Harbour Plaza Metropolis has a good access to the campus, but if you have a wheelchair, of another accessibility problem, the path is not easy to find. If there is enough demand for a daily shuttle service to the conference venue, DIS’18 organizes it from Harbour Plaza.If you need a shuttle, please write to Mr. Pierre Tam at publicity@dis2018.org before 31 May.

Hotel ICON

Icon is a luxurious hotel very close to the campus. It is in fact owned by PolyU, and hosts its tourism school. The hotel is run by professionals; the school is mostly underground, and you meet students only if you go to their training facilities. Icon’s food is excellent, the setting sumptuous, and you get amazing views over Victoria Harbour from the upper floors of the building.

Residence G Hong Kong

A residence type accommodation located about 5 minutes by foot to the university. Many guests have said they enjoyed this place, which is also very conveniently located in Tsim Sha Tsui, but not in the absolutely most touristic corner.

Best Western Plus Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui

This hotel has a convenient location especially if you love Korean food (true!) As you see, the rooms are cheap, but enough for one person. To get to the campus, you need to cross two very busy streets, so if you have accessibility problems, think twice. The access is good, but these streets may be dangerous.

Best Western Grand Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui

Another Best Western in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is the southernmost part of Kowloon. Like its sister above, this hotel offers basic conveniences, but its environment is a bit more upscale. Great value for money but access to the campus is complicated.

Hotel Panorama by Rhombus

Panorama hotel is tucked away in a side alley in one of the busiest areas of Tsim Sha Tsui. The hotel is pleasent and as its name suggests, the views towards Victoria Harbour are panoramic. One of our old British friends was there in a summer monsoon and loved his Blade Runner experience (referring to the old film). Panorama is about 10 minutes by foot form the campus, but the sidewalks can be very crowded, so if you have problems with accessibility, think again.

The Mira

The Mira is located in one of the great streets of the world, Nathan Road, and it is smack dab in the middle of Hong Kong’s tourism industry, so the surroundings are very busy 24 hours a day. Great restaurants and shopping, but the campus is about 15 minutes away by foot, and there is no convenient transport. For this reason, do not book the Mira if accessibility is an issue.

From the trivia department, this is a place to get a whim of international espionage and data security: Edward Snowden stayed in The Mira when he was in Hong Kong.

New World Millennium HK Hotel

This is the only hotel of our selection located in East Tsim Sha Tsui. New World Millenium is on the border of being luxurious, and our previous European guests have loved it. Some of its rooms and its 14th floor bar has good views over the eastern section of Victoria Harbour. The area is less busy than Tsim Sha Tsui proper, and it has a good selection of Western food which, however, tends to be pricey. The hotel is about 10 minutes by foot from the conference venue, and some sections of the path are not easy for those who need assistance.

Booking on your own

In case you prefer to book a hotel not on our curated list, we can give a few tips:

• ‍Don’t take the cheapest alternatives unless you want share 50 sqft with four other people and have a toilet and the shower in the corridor
• For a decent place, prepare to pay 1000-1500 HKD/night and do not think a hotel is excellent if its name says so
•  Book well in advance. Hong Kong hotels are typically very full
• Our tip is to avoid hotels from the Island. It is very lively and famous for many good reasons, but if you do not know buses, travel time may easily be 90-100 minutes.
  

1. However, if you do not believe us, try hotels in Causeway Bay (from the Island, take bus 112 or 116 towards So Uk, stop Cross Harbour Tunnel Toll Plaza), or Sai Ying Pun/Sheung Wan/Wan Chai/Mid-Levels (from the Island, take bus 104 towards Pak Tin, stop Cross Harbour Tunnel Toll Plaza)
2. Causeway Bay is one of the busiest areas of Hong Kong, so avoid it if you prefer solitude. North Point is less busy but farther away
3. Sai Ying Pun/Sheung Wan/Wan Chai/Mid-Levels is lively. SYP/SW have a local feeling, WC/M-L are upscale and the latter heavily expat, so if you can’t live without Aperol Spritz with bankers, go fro Mid-Levels around Hollywood Road. It may be an expensive choice however

• If you take a hotel from Sai Ying Pun/Sheung Wan/Wan Chai/Mid-Levels area, take airport train to Central and continue with a taxi. Cabs are not expensive and take you where you want. If you don’t know the town, you will get lost, and the area above Central is a mountain, not a hill. In subtropical summer, you will regret especially if you have bags to carry
• If your hotel is in Causeway Bay/North Point, take the airport train to Central and change to Island Line heading to Chai Wan. This is not convenient. Island Line is always about as packed as the biggest lines in London, Paris and New York when they are really busy
